In 1775, the United States attacked the British on Canadian soil to advance their independence movement. The combined British, French-speaking “Canayens” and First Nations soldiers succeeded in pushing them back. This mural depicts a Canayen, Antoine Gauthier, leading American troops through wet marshland. His wife, Marie-Josephe Girard, warns Landron, the militia captain, who then warned the troops of the coming attack. After two hours, the Americans retreated back to the United States.
